East Carolina's top-seeded tandem of Aleksey Kochetov and Stephen Whitwell captured an 8-6 win to clinch a pivotal doubles point and lift the Pirates to a 4-3 non-conference victory over Richmond Thursday afternoon at the Westhampton Tennis Complex in Richmond.

The triumph snapped ECU's two-match losing skid and improved the Pirates' overall spring record to 7-10.

UCF names new women's hoops coach

Joi Williams-Felton has been named coach of the Central Florida women's basketball program. She comes to UCF after four seasons at Murray State in Kentucky, where she guided the team to a 21-10 overall record and a WNIT appearance in 2006-07.

Williams-Felton replaces Gail Striegler, who resigned earlier this month. Striegler was 106-128 during her eight years in Orlando.

In 2006-07, the Golden Knights finished 8-22 and 3-13 in Conference USA play to place 11th in the 12-team league for the second straight season.

Boston College freshman quarterback Ross Applegate has decided to transfer to another school in the fall, according to Eagles coach Jeff Jagodzinski.

Kickoff times for East Carolina's 2007 home football games were announced Thursday.

Conference USA also released its 2007 CSTV schedule, which includes ECU contests against North Carolina, N.C. State and Central Florida.

East Carolina's home schedule will open with a 6 p.m. start against North Carolina on Sept. 8. The Pirates begin league play against defending divisional champion Southern Miss a week later on Sept. 15 with another 6 p.m. kickoff.

After trips to West Virginia and Houston, ECU will return to Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium Oct. 6 for a 7:30 p.m. matchup against UCF and will follow two weeks later by welcoming N.C. State to Greenville for the first time since 1999 in a 4:30 p.m. clash.

The Pirates will close out the month of October and help celebrate Homecoming festivities on the 27th when they host UAB at 3 p.m.

ECU will conclude regular season play at 1 p.m. on Nov. 24 against Tulane.

Naismith honors bestowed on Yow, Knight

College basketball coaching icons Kay Yow of N.C. State and Bob Knight of Texas Tech have been selected as the 2007 Naismith honorees for outstanding contributions to women's and men's basketball, respectively.

On February 16, the court at historic Reynolds Coliseum was renamed in honor of Yow, a 1964 graduate of East Carolina. Knight surpassed former North Carolina coach Dean Smith in career victories during the 2006-07 season.

State coach's son facing serious charges

The son of N.C. State basketball coach Sidney Lowe was arrested and charged Tuesday night in connection with a shooting at a UNC Greensoro dormitory over the weekend, according to a Greensboro News & Record report.

The newspaper additionally stated that Sidney Rochell Lowe II, 21, of 4437 Carly's Way in Greensboro, has been charged in a home invasion from earlier this month.

Charges from UNCG police against the younger Lowe, a junior at N.C. A&T:

  • Felony aiding and abetting an attempted armed robbery
  • Two counts of possession of a weapon on educational property
  • Possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana
  • Possession of one-half to 1½ ounces of marijuana
  • Maintaining a dwelling for keeping and selling a controlled substance
  • Three counts of possession of stolen goods and property.

The News & Record also reported that Greensboro police said they had connected Lowe II to a March 16 home invasion in the 1300 block of West Friendly Avenue. He faces 13 charges tied to that incident, including kidnapping, armed robbery and assault with a deadly weapon.

All charges were the result of a search warrant served Monday night on Lowe II's home in Greensboro. Among the items recovered was a semiautomatic assault rifle, police said.

Coach Lowe was seen at the magistrate's office Tuesday night, where his son surrendered in the company of Greensboro attorney Locke Clifford.

Tigers, Mountaineers match up in NIT final

Clemson lost the 1999 NIT final to California.

Tigers, Calipari agree to pact through 2011-12

Memphis basketball coach John Calipari has reached an agreement in principle which will extend the coach's contract through the 2011-12 season.

The school's announcement of the lucrative deal ended speculation in the media and among fans that Calipari would fill the head coaching vacancy at Kentucky.

Calipari cited the school's strong support of the Tigers basketball program as a key factor in his decision to extend his tenure at Memphis.

Calipari has posted a record of 181-63 during his seven seasons at Memphis. In his 15 years as a collegiate coach, Calipari has amassed an overall record of 374-134.

Memphis won 25 in a row this season before losing 92-76 to top-seeded Ohio State in the South regional final of the NCAA Tournament.

ECU football depth chart set for release today

Three days after conducting their first official intra-squad scrimmage of the spring, the East Carolina football team returned to the Cliff Moore practice complex and turned in an enthusiastic two-hour workout in shorts and helmets.

Third-year coach Skip Holtz and his staff are nearing the completion of full game-tape evaluations and the development of ECU's first public depth chart, scheduled for release on Wednesday afternoon.

"For the most part, I think we accomplished what we needed to Friday," Holtz said after reviewing the 120-plus-play controlled scrimmage. "Our goals early in the spring are to solidify our interior with the offensive and defensive lines and, from that standpoint, we were able to get a lot of situational looks running the football."

ECU has six more spring practice sessions remaining, including a second scrimmage scheduled for Friday afternoon and the Purple-Gold game on April 14.

"The longer we go into the spring, the deeper we'll go into the team concept," Holtz said. "This week we'll key more on down and distance orientation, such as first-and-10 and moving the chains on third down, before working on getting our skill personnel in open spaces with emphasis on our passing game the following week."

ECU's Eldridge named C-USA hitter of week

After helping East Carolina increase its winning streak to 13 games, Pirate junior outfielder Harrison Eldridge has been named the Conference USA hitter of the week.

Eldridge batted .533 (8-for-15) on the week and helped the Pirates to a perfect 4-0 record, including a sweep of Memphis in league play and its 13th consecutive win. In three of his four games played, Eldridge collected two hits and scored two runs, while pushing his career multi-hit games to 43. He scored eight runs from the lead-off spot, had three RBI's, four doubles and two walks, raising his batting average to .358, which ranks third on the team.

The league’s pitcher of the week honor went Houston freshman left-handed pitcher Wes Musick, who had a career-best outing in the Cougars shutout win at Central Florida on Saturday.
