North Carolina failed to hold a 12-point lead and lost 89-87 at Maryland on Sunday, dropping the Tar Heels out of sole possession of first place in the ACC standings and into a tie with Virginia and Virginia Tech.

All three teams are 10-4 in league play.

D.J. Strawberry had a career-high 27 points as the Terps extended their winning streak to five games.

Duke clinched the No. 1 seed in the upcoming 2007 Atlantic Coast Conference women's basketball tournament, which will begin Thursday, March 1, at the Greensboro Coliseum, with a 67-62 win over North Carolina on Sunday.

The Blue Devils (29-0) became the first women's team to finish the regular season undefeated in ACC history.

Zack Greer posted two goals and three assists and Sam Payton won 11-of-12 face-offs and added two goals as sixth-ranked Duke defeated 12th-ranked Denver, 13-9, on a rainy Sunday afternoon in Durham.

The Blue Devils improve to 2-0 while the Pioneers fall to 1-2. Duke resumed lacrosse after canceling the remainder of the 2006 season when three members of the team were charged for sexual assault.
