Hinnant makes All C-USA freshmen team

Sam Hinnant became the fourth Pirate in East Carolina's five seasons in the league to earn All-Conference USA freshman honors. The 6-foot-2 guard from Charlotte is the only other player besides second team All-Conference selection Corey Rouse to start all 27 games for East Carolina in 2005-06. Hinnant is second on the team in scoring at 10.4 points per game.

Joining Hinnant on the all-freshman squad are the Memphis duo of Shawne Williams and Chris Douglas-Robert, Courtney Beasley of Southern Mississippi and Markel Humphrey of Marshall. Williams was named the Freshman of the Year in voting by the league's 12 head coaches and select media members.

The awards were announced Tuesday by the conference office in Irving, TX.

ESPN nixes Vitale's commentary on CBS

Dick Vitale, on ESPN since its first college basketball game in 1979, hasn't worked the NCAA men's college basketball tournament. But CBS wanted him to call early-round action this month, according to Michael Hiestand of USA Today.

ESPN didn't think it was a good idea.

"To me, this seemed like an obvious no-brainer that would have benefited everyone," said Sean McManus, who oversees CBS' sports and news divisions. "But I certainly respect ESPN's decision."

Vitale says he's OK with it, too: "They told me no way because I'm their signature voice. I'm flattered ESPN feels I have that stature. If it were earlier in my career, it would have been a bigger deal."

Seahawks are dancin'

UNC-Wilmington captured the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament championship with a 78-67 win over Hofstra on Monday night in Richmond. It was the Seahawks' fourth league tournament title in seven years.

T.J. Carter scored 23 points as UNCW improved to 25-7, including 16-3 since an 82-69 loss at East Carolina on Dec. 31.

The Seahawks are headed for the Big Dance with a history of causing havoc for higher seeds.
