Bailey
heads for Starkville via Iraq
Timmy Bailey, a 6-foot-3, 241-pound
linebacker, signed a football letter of intent with Mississippi State on
Wednesday, two months after returning from a year of active duty with the
Mississippi National Guard in Iraq.
Bailey, who runs a 4.6-second time for
40 yards and possesses a 41-inch vertical jump, could have played against
East Carolina had he accepted his only other Division I-A offer out of
Riverside High school in Avon, MS, which was from Southern Miss.
Bailey instead joined the National
Guard and, after going through basic training, enrolled at Mississippi Delta
Community College, where he led the team in tackles with 95 in 2003 before
his unit was called to active duty.
SEC schools Ole Miss and Alabama as
well as Big 12 member Texas A&M offered him football grants following his
return from Iraq.
Bailey said he picked the Bulldogs
because Coach Sylvester Croom had recruited him prior to his assignment
overseas.
Texas A&M Gridders vie in "Big Splash"
The second-annual “Big Splash” diving
competition, so named because it features some of the larger members of the
Texas A&M football team, will be held in conjunction with the Texas A&M
men’s swimming and diving team’s home meet with archrival Texas on Friday.
The “Big Splash” will be contested
during the break between the actual one-meter and three-meter diving events.
A new “Big Splash” Champion is assured
since last year’s winner, tight end Joey Thomas, will not compete. Among the
heavyweights scheduled to splash down are 300-pounders Kirk Elder, Chris
Yoder and Vincent Williams.
