Cover boy Redick and Duke tripped by hex
It didn't take long for the Sports
Illustrated cover jinx to bring down Duke's J.J. Redick and the top-ranked
Blue Devils.
Redick and Gonzaga's Adam Morrison are
on the front of the SI edition that hit newstands on Wednesday. Duke was
stunned 79-74 by Florida State in Tallahassee on Wednesday night.
SI's Grant Wahl takes a look at Redick
and Morrison's unique friendship, according to Duke's athletic web site, and
gives the results of an SI survey of 67 players, one from each of the six
traditional power conferences to vote for player of the year among other
things.
The article states: "The reason cited
most often by those who voted for Redick was that he has played against
tougher competition within the ACC. In fact, Duke ranks third in the nation
in strength of schedule; Gonzaga, a member of the mid-major West Coast
Conference, is 90th."
About their friendship it states:
"Because Redick and Morrison communicate so often in their digital-driven
friendship — by cellphone, text-messaging and their Halo 2 headsets — it’s
easy to forget they’ve met in person only once, at the 2004 Michael Jordan
summer camp."
Off the court they’re not much alike...
but "The common denominator is that we both love basketball," Redick said.
Duke returns to action on Saturday
night at home against rival North Carolina, a contest that an EA Sports
simulation has the Blue Devils winning by 10 points.
Marlins need 9th-inning rally to edge Miami
The 24th-ranked Miami baseball team's
bid for a second consecutive upset win against the Florida Marlins fell just
short in a 9-8 exhibition loss at Roger Dean Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
Matt Cepicky's two-run, two-out double
off Jason Santana capped a three-run ninth for the Marlins, who were playing
their first exhibition contest of spring training.
Jesus Delgado picked up the win for the
Marlins, who lost to the Hurricanes last year, 9-7. The Hurricanes fell to
1-6-1 all-time against the Marlins and 2-24-1 overall against major league
baseball teams.
