Diamond Deacs stun top-ranked Gators

Wake Forest junior Charlie Mellies tossed a 118-pitch masterpiece leading the Demon Deacons to a 4-0 shutout of top-ranked Florida in the championship game of the 2006 Pepsi Baseball Classic in Gainesville, FL.

Pairings set for C-USA women's tournament

After earning its first-ever conference championship in women's basketball on Friday, regular season champion Tulsa will be the No. 1 seed in this week's Conference USA Women's Tournament, March 2-5 at Southern Methodist's Moody Coliseum in Dallas.

As the No. 1 seed, Tulsa will have a first round bye at the 2006 C-USA Women's Basketball Championship. Other teams receiving first round byes include No. 2 Rice, No. 3 SMU and No. 4 Southern Miss. Thursday's first round match-ups pit: No. 8 East Carolina vs. No. 9 UAB at 1 p.m.; No. 5 Marshall vs. No. 12 Memphis at 3:30 p.m.; No. 7 Houston vs. No. 10 Texas-El Paso at 6 p.m.; and No. 6 Tulane vs. No. 11 Central Florida at 8:30 p.m.

In Friday's quarterfinal round, No. 1 Tulsa will take on the winner of the ECU-UAB game at 1 p.m., and No. 4 Southern Miss will face the winner of the Marshall-Memphis match-up at 3:30 p.m.

No. 2 Rice, winner of seven in a row, will take on the winner of the Houston-UTEP game at 6 p.m., while No. 3 seed SMU will close out Friday night with the winner of the Tulane-UCF contest at 8:30 p.m.

Davis wins last home game at Indiana

On senior day, Indiana took a 78-71 basketball win over No. 18/16 (AP/Coaches) Michigan State in the final home game for Hoosiers coach Mike Davis, who has resigned effective at the end of the season.

"I won my first game as a coach here and I won my last game," Davis said after the contest at Assembly Hall in Bloomington, IN. "Over the last two years, we have been 15-1 in conference play at home. I just thought about everything [at the end of the game].

"The opportunity to be the coach of Indiana; people have been very nice to me, my family has definitely benefited from me being the coach here. I am really emotional, but at the same time, really excited about the fact that I have grown so much over the last six years.

"I thought about the players that have gotten better every year. I thought about Coach [Donnie] Marsh, Coach [Kerry] Rupp, and Coach [Sidney] Green. Just to be able to bring three former head coaches and put them on the staff is really special to me. I cannot explain to people how appreciative I am about this opportunity."
