HATTIESBURG, MS — East
Carolina slipped to the bottom rung of the
Conference USA basketball ladder with a
74-56 loss at Southern Miss on Saturday.
The outcome broke a tie in
the league cellar and gave the Golden Eagles (9-20, 3-11 C-USA), who
snapped a 5-game losing streak, the No. 11 seeding for the league
tournament, which gets underway on Wednesday in Memphis.
ECU (8-19, 2-12) lost its
third straight and seventh in its last eight games despite 13 points
from Courtney Captain. Corey Rouse had 11 points and 11 rebounds in his
final regular season game for the Pirates — his 27th career
double-double. Sam Hinnant had 10 points in the losing effort.
It was the final regular
season game for both teams. ECU will be seeded 12th in the C-USA
Tournament, which will be staged at the FedEx Forum, the home court of
regular season champion Memphis. The Pirates will face No. 5 seed

Jason Forte had 17 points
for Southern Miss. Jarekus Singleton and Craig Craft added 12 points
apiece for the Golden Eagles. Courtney Beasley scored 11 points and
Mildon Ambres tallied 10 for Southern Miss.
The Golden Eagles had lost
11 of its last 12 games but led by as many as 19 points late in the
game. ECU had an early 4-point advantage. A 12-5 run helped Southern
Miss to a 28-20 lead at the half.
ECU was outrebounded
42-32. The Golden Eagles managed 18 points off of ECU's 19 turnovers.
