NOTES FROM ECU AND BEYOND...

Next Day Nuggets...
Compiled from staff reports
and electronic dispatches
ECU-Maryland rainout spawns Sunday twinbill
East Carolina and Maryland were rained
out of their scheduled baseball game on Saturday afternoon and will play a
doubleheader at Clark-LeClair Stadium beginning at 11 a.m. today.
ECU season ticket holders can use Game
Three tickets for admission to both games. Those who purchased individual
tickets for Game Two may exchange them at the ticket office for Game Three
tickets. Gates will open at 9:30 a.m.
ECU started the season with a
6-1 win over the Terps on Friday.
Spurrier staff undergoes renovations
South Carolina head football coach
Steve Spurrier has announced several coaching assignment changes.
The Gamecocks earlier worked out a
buyout agreement on the contract of former East Carolina coach John
Thompson, whose duties as defensive coordinator had been adjusted during the
2005 season.
Tyrone Nix will remain as the defensive
coordinator and will coach the inside linebackers. Last season, Nix was a
co-defensive coordinator with Thompson and worked with the defensive line.
David Reaves has been given the title
of Recruiting Coordinator in addition to his duties as assistant
quarterbacks coach.
Ron Cooper has been given the
additional title of assistant head coach and will move from linebackers
coach to secondary coach.
Dave Wommack will switch from the
secondary to the outside linebackers, while Fred Chatham will be the special
teams coordinator in addition to coaching the tight ends.
Sutton misses game after auto accident
Oklahoma State head basketball coach
Eddie Sutton was home Saturday afternoon after being released from the
Stillwater (OK) Medical Center.
He was admitted Friday evening
following an automobile accident while traveling to the airport for a trip
to College Station, TX, for a game at Texas A&M.
Sutton suffered no serious injuries and
will continue to recover from bumps, bruises and lacerations suffered in the
accident.
“It is good to be home, although I
would rather be with my team in College Station,” Sutton said. “I am
certainly with them in spirit and I’m counting on them winning today, which
is the best medicine I could receive. I plan on rejoining the team as soon
as possible."
The hoped for medicine turned out to
have a bitter taste as Texas A&M edged the Cowboys 46-44 on Saturday.
Throng flocks to Lambeau for college hockey
The No. 4 Wisconsin hockey team skated
to a 4-2 victory over Ohio State in front of 40,890 fans Saturday afternoon
in the Frozen Tundra Hockey Classic at historic Lambeau Field, home of the
Green Bay Packers.
The contest, which also served as the
U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Game, drew the fourth-largest crowd ever for a
hockey game and the second-largest crowd for a college hockey game.
Weather conditions were better than had
been expected. The temperature at the opening faceoff was 28 degrees with
winds out of the west at seven miles per hour.
