FSU blue chipper says analyst advocated Irish
Myron Rolle, one of the nation's top
prospects who has already enrolled at Florida State, said recruiting analyst
Tom Lemming was proactive for Notre Dame in his contact with the defensive
back from Princeton, NJ, according to a report in USA Today.
East Carolina coach Skip Holtz said at
his signing day news conference on Wednesday that certain recruiting
analysts appear to use their influence on prospects and that the NCAA should
look into their unlimited contact with prospective college players.
Rolle told USA Today that Lemming told
him he would be "showcased" and would increase his chances of being most
valuable player in the annual U.S. Army All-American Bowl high school
all-star game if he kept a certain school (Notre Dame) on his recruiting
list.
Golden
Eagles work the home front
Southern Mississippi had the highest
rated football recruiting class in Conference USA, according to ESPN
Insider, and Golden Eagles coach Jeff Bower and staff didn't travel far from
Hattiesburg for the bulk of the signees.
"We got 17 signees in Mississippi and
I've said all along, this is where we want to recruit," Bower said. "It's
important to keep in-state players that are capable of playing Division I
ball in the state. We worked it hard and did a tremendous job.
"We had four signees from Florida, four
from Louisiana, two from Alabama and one from California, who is a junior
college player. We met most of our needs and we feel good about that. The
one thing that excites me is that 11 of our signees were in one of our
football camps this past summer. That's probably the most we've ever had. We
found out a lot about them and recruited them the entire time. We are very
excited and think we had a heck of a year."
Pirate softball hurler gets preseason honor
Houston has been picked by the league
coaches to win the 2006 Conference USA regular season softball title. The
Cougars totaled 67 points to edge out East Carolina (64) and league newcomer
Marshall (63).
East Carolina junior right-hander Keli
Harrell was tabbed as the league preseason pitcher of the year, while
Marshall sophomore utility player Rachel Folden was selected as the
preseason player of the year.
Harrell led Conference USA in wins and
ranked sixth nationally with 29 victories in 2005. Her 338 strikeouts last
year were a school record and helped her to second-team All-C-USA and
All-Southeast Region honors. Entering her junior year, Harrell already holds
the school record for career strikeouts with 499.
