Lady Pirates nip UAB in C-USA Tournament

The first game of the 2006 Conference USA Women's Basketball Tournament came down to the wire as No. 8 East Carolina survived with a 47-46 victory over No. 9 UAB on Thursday at Moody Coliseum in Dallas.

The victory was the first ever for the Lady Pirates in a C-USA basketball tournament. East Carolina moves on to face top-seeded Tulsa in today's first quarterfinal at 2 p.m. EST.

Jasmine Young's driving lay-up with 1:26 to play put East Carolina back in the lead by one point after UAB had erased a seven-point second-half deficit. Young's basket proved to be the game-winner as neither team scored in the final minute of play.

"I knew it was going to be a tough 40 minutes," East Carolina coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener said. "Both teams played really well, but I was proud that we came out with a win on the defensive end. Mentally and physically were not able to press the way I would like, but that's the direction we are headed."

UAB stuns Memphis to boost dance prospects

BIRMINGHAM — UAB held No. 3 Memphis scoreless for more than eight minutes down the stretch in capturing an 80-74 upset win on Thursday night.

A jumper by Marvett McDonald gave the Blazers a five-point lead with 2:47 to go, and UAB (21-5, 11-2) made six consecutive free throws in the final 33 seconds to snap the Tigers' 15-game winning streak.

McDonald led the Blazers with 17 points.

UAB fans poured onto the court to celebrate a win that bolstered the team's NCAA tournament hopes.

Memphis (26-3, 12-1) already has clinched the No. 1 seed in the Conference USA tournament, but could have secured the regular-season title outright with a win.

Mile High hosting in-state rivals

Rivals Colorado and Colorado State will return to Mile High Stadium in Denver for the first time since 2003.

The schools will meet this Sept. 9, with kickoff set for 5 p.m. EDT on College Sports TV (CSTV).

The universities signed a three-year agreement insuring the game will stay in Denver through 2008. The pact includes options that could extend the deal to 10 years.

After this year, the game will be played the Saturday of Labor Day Weekend (Sept. 1, 2007, and Aug. 30, 2008).
