N.C. Hall to enshrine ECU grad Charlie Adams
East Carolina University alumnus
Charlie Adams, the state's top high school sports administrator for more
than two decades, is among a class of ten individuals selected for induction
this year into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame.
A native of Cary and current resident
of Chapel Hill, Adams joins an incoming Hall of Fame class that includes Bob
Bartholomew (Winston-Salem), Dave Bristol (Andrews), Charlie Bryant (Cary),
Darrell Floyd (Thomasville), Ron Green, Sr. (Charlotte), Bob Harris
(Durham), Steve Jones (St. Louis, MO, formerly of Sanford), Simon Terrell
(Chapel Hill), and Deborah A. Yow (College Park, MD, formerly of
Gibsonville).
"These ten men and women have brought
honor to our state both locally and nationally," stated Bobby Vaughan,
president of the Hall. "Honoring individuals who have excelled outside the
boundaries of the playing field, in addition to those who played the games,
makes our N.C. Sports Hall of Fame very special."
Adams played basketball for the Pirates
from 1956-59. He was inducted into the ECU Athletics Hall of Fame in 1991
and will be the 10th sports figure with ties to ECU to enter the N.C. Hall
since its establishment in 1963.
After a coaching stint at Cary High
School (1962-66), Adams joined the NCHSAA as assistant director in 1967. He
was elevated to executive director of the governing body of North Carolina
High School sports in 1984.
ECU-connected individuals previously
enshrined in the N.C. Sports Hall of Fame: Carlester Crumpler, Paul Gay,
Bobby Hodges, Terry Holland (current athletics director), Leora "Sam" Jones,
Earl Smith, Clarence Stasavich, George Whitfield and Kay Yow.
The 2006 inductees will be introduced
at an afternoon news conference at the N.C. Museum of History in Raleigh on
May 11, and formal induction will come during an evening banquet at the
North Raleigh Hilton. Ticket information can be obtained by calling 919
852-4396 or by visiting the organization's website (www.ncshof.org).
Pirates announce '2-for-$20' hoops ticket deal
A special "Two For $20" ticket package
for East Carolina's next two basketball games was announced Friday by the
school's athletic department.
Fans may purchase a ticket to
Saturday's home game with St. Paul's and a ticket for the Pirates' Wednesday
home contest against 4th-ranked Memphis for $20. The promotional bundle
represents a savings of $5 off the regular individual ticket prices of $10
for the St. Paul's game and $15 for the match-up with Memphis.
Tip-off time for both games is 7 p.m.
The ticket package can be purchased
online at
ecupirates.com or by calling the
athletic ticket office at 1-800-DIAL-ECU.
