Pirates, Deacs face off for first time since 1986
No. 22 Wake Forest (10-2) has some
business to take care of before it can turn its focus to top-ranked Duke's
visit to Joel Coliseum on Saturday.
The Demon Deacons host East Carolina
(5-6) Tuesday night in a 9 p.m. game that will be televised on Fox Sports
Net South.
Wake will seek its fourth straight win
at the expense of the Pirates, who are on a two-game mini-winning streak of
their own.
In their most recent games, the Deacons
demolished Charleston Southern 87-47 on Friday, while East Carolina
dispatched of UNC-Wilmington 82-69 on Saturday.
A couple of faces familiar with the territory will accompany the Pirates to
Winston-Salem.
Jeremy Ingram, averaging 12.5 points
per game, played eight games for Wake Forest as a freshman before
transferring to ECU last spring. He became eligible to play for the Pirates
in December at the end of the fall semester.
Ricky Stokes, in his first season as
head coach at ECU after serving as an assistant at South Carolina under Dave
Odom, was on Odom's staff at Wake Forest from 1989-1997.
The Deacs won all three previous
meetings with ECU, the most recent being a 65-60 victory in Winston-Salem in
1986.
Wake's battle with Duke on Saturday
marks the start of a stretch in which the Demon Deacons will play 16 of 17
games against ACC foes.
ECU also has another ranked opponent on
its short-term horizon. After hosting Division II St. Paul's on Saturday,
the Pirates open their Conference USA schedule at home on Wednesday, Jan. 11, against No. 4
Memphis.
