Marshall fends off
Pirates

HUNTINGTON, WV — East
Carolina played its closest Conference USA road game this season but was
topped 72-66 at Marshall on Wednesday night.
The Pirates made an early
5-0 run before the Thundering Herd responded with a 19-4 run of its own.
ECU, which slipped to 7-13
overall and 1-6 in C-USA, came back to tie the game at 36 when Courtney
Captain hit back-to-back 3-pointers to complete an 8-0 Pirate flurry.
A 7-2 ECU run reduced
Marshall's lead to 69-66 with 21 seconds left but two foul shots by Mark
Patton with 11 seconds remaining sealed the outcome.
Patton led Marshall (9-10,
2-4 C-USA) with 17 points and Markel Humphrey added 11 points for the
Herd.
ECU was paced by its
Kinston connection as Jeremy Ingram and Corey Rouse each scored 15
points. Rouse narrowly missed a double-double as he snared nine
rebounds.
Point guard Japhet McNeil
had 11 assists and four steals.
The Pirates have lost
seven straight on the road, but will return to the friendly confines of
Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum to host Houston at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
The Cougars (13-6, 4-3),
directed by former Texas coach Tom Penders, handed Texas-El Paso its
first league loss by a 63-57 margin on Wednesday night.
