Injuries take toll on East Carolina hoops squad
With a Wednesday night visit by No. 5
Memphis looming, East Carolina has been hit by a pair of untimely injuries.
Senior forward Mike Castro and
sophomore guard Tom Hammonds have been sidelined by a foot and ankle injury,
respectively, ECU coach Ricky Stokes announced Monday.
Castro, who has not played since a Dec.
18 game at Winthrop, will be out indefinitely as a result of the nagging
injury to his right foot, according to Stokes, while Hammonds will not play
against Memphis and is listed as questionable for a game on Saturday at
Texas-El Paso.
Hammonds sprained his left ankle in the
Pirates' home win over St. Paul's this past
Saturday.
ECU will open its Conference USA
schedule Wednesday night at 7 p.m. with a home game against the Tigers. The
contest will be televised by CSTV.
Tulane shifts baseball games to Zephyr Field
NEW ORLEANS — Tulane's baseball team
will play its home games this season at Zephyr Field in Metairie, LA, after
flooding caused by Hurricane Katrina rendered its on-campus field
unplayable.
The Green Wav will also use the
ballpark, the home of the Washington Nationals' Triple-A affiliate, as a
practice site beginning Jan. 17.
The move to Zephyr Field will not
affect East Carolina's series this season with the Wave. Tulane and ECU are
scheduled to play a three-game set at Clark-LeClair Stadium the weekend of
April 28-30.
Tulane spent much of last season ranked
No. 1 in the national polls and advanced to the College World Series for the
second time in school history. The team will play all 38 home games at
Zephyr Field, which has hosted 31 Tulane baseball games since 1998,
including the 2001 super regionals.
Last season, the Green Wave played four
games — vs. Arizona State, Cal State Fullerton, LSU and New Orleans — at
Zephyr Field and averaged 8,580 fans.
"We're appreciative of the Washington
Nationals for providing us with a tremendous venue," Green Wave coach Rick
Jones said. "And I believe we have an opportunity from an attendance
standpoint, based on past history, to do some special things this spring."
Turchin Stadium, Tulane's on-campus
baseball facility, was in the process of being renovated when Hurricane
Katrina hit New Orleans on Aug. 29. The upgrades were scheduled to be
completed by February, but the field was covered by several feet of water
after the storm and set the process back.
Tulane will share the stadium with the
New Orleans Zephyrs on seven dates.
"With the amount of games that will be
played here this year, the upkeep of the field is of utmost importance,"
Zephyrs general manager Mike Schline said. "And the Nationals have shown a
tremendous amount of confidence in the Zephyr Field grounds crew's ability
to maintain Triple-A standards."
