Diamond Bucs assign LeClair's No. 23 to Witter

Senior first baseman Adam Witter will wear the revered No. 23 during East Carolina's 2006 baseball season, Pirate head coach Billy Godwin announced on Saturday.

The jersey number was worn by ECU Hall of Famer and former head coach Keith LeClair throughout his coaching and playing career.

LeClair was forced to step down following the 2002 season because of the effects of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also know as ALS or Lou Gehrig's Disease.

Witter is the fourth recipient of the number since it became an honorary symbol for the Pirate baseball program in 2003 as a tribute to LeClair.

No. 23 is awarded to a player who best displays the hustle, determination and desire that marked LeClair's success as a coach and player. Ben Sanderson wore the number in 2003, Jamie Page in 2004 and Brian Cavanaugh in 2005.

Witter, a four-year player for the Pirates, had his best season in 2005, batting .328 with seven home runs and 33 RBI's in 55 games played. The left-handed hitter from Chambersburg, PA, saw action as a catcher, first baseman and designated hitter.

The Pirates will open the 2006 season on Friday, Feb. 10, when they host Maryland at 3 p.m. at Clark-LeClair Stadium.
