UAB's football coach relinquishes AD position

BIRMINGHAM — UAB football coach Watson Brown is giving up his duties as athletic director.

University president Carol Z. Garrison said Tuesday that she and Brown decided "football needed his undivided attention" after he had served more than three years in a dual role.

"This allows Watson to focus solely on recruiting, evaluating where the football program stands and putting into place the elements necessary for a successful season next year," Garrison said.

The Blazers, who made their first bowl game in 2004, had expected to contend for another this season but finished 5-6 in Brown's 11th season as head coach.

Brown served a stint as East Carolina's quarterbacks coach during the tenure of former Pirate head coach Pat Dye (1974-79).

Richard Margison, UAB's vice president for finance and administration, will take over the responsibilities of running the athletic department on an interim basis.

Garrison said the arrangement will last at least several months.

Margison oversees all of the university's business operations and facilities, and has worked closely with the athletics department's leadership.

"I plan to be involved in the management of the athletic department on a regular basis and to immerse myself quickly in this role so that all of our coaches and staff have the support they need to be successful," Margison said.

Player who broke teammate's jaw reinstated

EL PASO — Texas-El Paso's Jason Williams is back on the team following his suspension last week for punching a teammate and breaking his jaw.

Coach Doc Sadler reinstated him Monday, and the senior forward practiced with the team. The coach said Williams, who averages 15.4 points, will play Saturday against New Mexico State.

"I've got to make a decision based on what is best for our basketball program," Sadler said at a news conference. "I took into consideration what happened, the people involved, their teammates, the coaching staff and the fans."

Sadler has said Williams hit Stefon Jackson during a "very competitive practice." Williams has apologized. Jackson had surgery and is out for at least six weeks.
