Ten recruits to join Pirates' quest for Omaha
The transition from one head coach to
another in East Carolina's baseball program apparently had little if any
effect on the team's recruiting efforts as evidenced by the credentials of
the school's 10-man fall recruiting class.
Billy Godwin, who stepped up from
interim status to officially succeed Randy Mazey as head coach of the
Pirates on Oct. 28, indicated on that day in an interview with
Bonesville.net's Brian Bailey that he and his staff had already essentially
completed their early recruiting campaign by gaining verbal commitments from
targeted players.
The list of recruits was made public
Tuesday after signed letters-of-intent were received from six high school
seniors and four junior college transfers.
The six prep players are pitchers
Michael Anderson, Joe O'Malley and Zach Woods, catcher/infielder Bobby
Fowler, outfielder Devin Harris and first baseman Kyle Roller.
Pitcher Bailey Daniels, outfielders
Trent Ashcraft and Mark Letchworth and catcher/infielder Corey Kemp are the
junior college transfers.
Godwin is high on the recruiting haul,
which he characterizes as balanced, talented and up to the mission he has in
store for them.
"We (coaching staff) believe this
recruiting class is an outstanding match to our returning players," said
Godwin in a statement. "It gives us a great blend of junior college and high
school talent. Each of these players has the ability to step in and compete
at the highest level and help us reach our goal of reaching the College
World Series in Omaha."
Geographically, the class is anchored
by in-state signees, but the overall group spans a crescent ranging from
Tennessee to New York. Five of the players are from North Carolina and two
are from Tennessee, while New York, New Jersey and Virginia are each home to
one of the incoming players.
The recruits will join the ECU team for
the 2007 season.
