Contrite UTEP hoops star accepts punishment
EL PASO, TX — Texas-El Paso star
forward Jason Williams apologized Friday following his indefinite suspension
for punching a teammate and breaking his jaw during practice.
"I'm here to apologize first and
foremost to Stefon (Jackson) for the position I put him in," said Williams,
the Miners' leading scorer.
Williams, a senior who averages 15.4
points a game, also apologized to his coaches, the university and fans.
UTEP coach Doc Sadler announced the
disciplinary measure Wednesday,
a day after Williams punched Jackson, a
freshman, during a "very competitive practice."
Williams said he agrees with his
coach's decision to suspend him.
"I'm a hundred percent behind his
decision; I take responsibility for that," Williams said. "My main focus is
that (Jackson) gets over this."
It is unclear when Jackson or Williams,
who hasn't missed a start since transferring from Kilgore College in 2003,
will play again for the Miners.
UTEP (4-1), in its first years as a
member of Conference USA, hosts non-league opponent Louisiana-Lafayette on
Saturday.
