Dooley expresses regret over heated remark

A well-respected Kansas assistant basketball coach with past ties to East Carolina apologized Friday for cursing at a Nevada player following the 20th-ranked Wolf Pack's 72-70 win over the Jayhawks on Thursday night.

Joe Dooley, East Carolina's head coach from 1995-99, yelled at Nevada star Nick Fazekas as the two teams shook hands following the game in Lawrence, KS.

"I responded in a negative manner to something that was said to me following the game," Dooley said in a statement released by the Kansas athletic department. "I certainly apologize to the Nevada program, and this is not the manner in which Kansas basketball should be represented."

Dooley, 57-52 during his four-year stint at the helm of the ECU program, is the only coach among the Pirates' last ten to have left Greenville with a winning record. In a controversial move, he was fired by former Pirates athletic director Mike Hamrick.

Fazekas scored a game-high 35 points to lead the Wolf Pack (4-0) over the Jayhawks (2-3) in a wild finish.

"He has apologized to us publicly and privately, and we accepted his apologies," Nevada coach Mark Fox said in a statement.

"We emphasize that Nick Fazekas was celebrating with a teammate and did not say anything to Joe Dooley. It simply was an emotional moment after a hard-fought game. We wish Kansas the best of luck this season."

With less than 5 seconds remaining, Kansas' Jeff Hawkins drove to the basket but got caught up in traffic near the baseline and dished to C.J. Giles in the lane. The 6-foot-11 Fazekas knocked the ball away as Giles went up to shoot, and time ran out.

Jayhawks coach Bill Self stormed onto the court, demanding a foul be called, but to no avail. He said later that "obviously, in a hotly contested game like this one, emotions were high after the game."
