Mazey, ECU put divorce settlement in writing

East Carolina University and its former head baseball coach are officially parting ways. Randy Mazey, the coach of the Pirates for the past three seasons, has resigned and will leave the university on Dec. 31, the school said in a Thursday afternoon press release.

Billy Godwin was named to succeed Mazey on Oct. 28, less than three weeks after stepping in on an interim basis following Mazey's suspension by athletic director Terry Holland. The  Oct. 10th suspension came after a period of defections and unrest within the program apparently came to a head.

Under Mazey, the Pirates extended their string of NCAA postseason berths to seven straight seasons but experienced divisions within the ranks.

"I enjoyed and will always appreciate the opportunity to serve our university; however, I believe this resignation is in our respective best interests," Mazey said in a letter to Holland that was quoted in ECU's annoucement.

In July 2004, the ECU Board of Trustees agreed to raise Mazey's salary to $100,000 per year and extended his contract through the 2008 season. Under the terms of a separation agreement noted in the release, Mazey will continue to receive a salary at $100,000 rate through the end of this month. Starting Jan. 1, 2006, he will be compensated at half that annual rate, with no benefits, until the contract expires on June 30, 2008.

Mazey succeeded ECU Hall of Famer Keith LeClair after the 2002 season. LeClair, who was forced to step down for health reasons, had publicly declared the program's number one objective to be reaching the College World Series, a goal that has been enthusiastically embraced by the East Carolina community.

"We wish Coach Mazey well," Holland stated in the release. "The focus of the baseball program is now exclusively back on our goal of getting to Omaha."

Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, NE, is where the College World Series is staged each year.
