College Football Headliners: Stars & Storylines

STARS

***   DeAngelo Williams ran for 127 yards and two touchdowns in his final game with Memphis, a 26-3 rout of Marshall. Williams' performance marked the 33rd game in which he surpassed 100 yards, tying him with Tony Dorsett of Pitt and Ohio State's Archie Griffin for the most career 100-yard games in NCAA history.

***   Kevin Kolb became Houston's all-time offensive leader in a 35-18 victory over Rice, throwing for 222 yards and a touchdown and rushing for 75 yards and a score. With a second-quarter completion, Kolb (9,530) surpassed the school mark of 9,327 all-purpose yards, set by quarterback David Klingler from 1988-91.

***   Cedric Humes, Virginia Tech, ran for a career-high 134 yards and two TDs to put No. 5 Virginia Tech in the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game with a 30-3 victory over North Carolina.

***   Bruce Eugene, Grambling State, threw for 418 yards and six touchdowns and ran for another score to lead the Tigers to a 50-35 victory over Southern. The six TDs were one short of Eugene's school record set two times previously.

***   Jerious Norwood, Mississippi State, rushed for 204 yards and three touchdowns on 34 carries and caught another score in the Bulldogs' 35-14 victory over Mississippi.

***   Montrell Jones, Louisville, caught six passes for a career-high 118 yards and two touchdowns in the No. 17 Cardinals' school-record 12th straight home win, 41-17 over Syracuse.

***   Adrian Peterson, Oklahoma, ran for a season-high 237 yards and scored touchdowns on 84 and 71-yard carries in a 42-14 rout of Oklahoma State.

***   Robert Hubbard, Nevada, ran for 146 yards and three touchdowns in the Wolf Pack's 38-35 win over No. 16 Fresno State.

***   D.J. Shockley and Tim Jennings, Georgia. Shockley threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Bryan McClendon with 3:18 remaining and Jennings made an interception at the goal line to seal the Bulldogs' 14-7 win over Georgia Tech.

CONTENDERS

West Virginia will play in the Bowl Championship Series for the first time, following Connecticut's 15-10 upset victory over South Florida. The Huskies' defense held the Bulls' rushing attack to 83 yards. South Florida was averaging 229.8 rushing yards a game — the second-best in the Big East. ... Virginia Tech advanced to the ACC title game by beating North Carolina 30-3. The Hokies led only 6-3 at halftime, but got two TD runs from Cedric Humes in the second half. ... Notre Dame qualified for its first BCS berth in five years by beating Stanford 38-31. After Stanford took a 31-30 lead with less than two minutes remaining, Darius Walker ran 6 yards for the winning touchdown with 55 seconds remaining and took a direct snap to make the 2-point conversion.

DEJA VU

Colorado will play second-ranked Texas in Houston next week, after Iowa State let a berth in the Big 12 title game slip away with a 24-21 overtime loss to Kansas. It was the second straight year the Buffaloes earned their trip to the title game thanks to the Cyclones losing by a field goal in overtime. The Longhorns, who already beat Colorado 42-17 on Oct. 15, need a win to play for the national championship.

LEADER OF THE WAC

Nevada upset No. 16 Fresno State 38-35 Saturday to claim at least a share of the Western Athletic Conference title in a crazy finish played without the stadium clock the final 6 minutes. The Bulldogs were coming off a near-upset of No. 1 Southern California.

KING OF THE SWAMP

No. 19 Florida finished undefeated at home for the first time since 2000 with a 34-7 rout of No. 23 Florida State. The Gators hadn't knocked off their top three rivals — Tennessee, Georgia and Florida State — in the same season since 1996.

DOMINATED

Tennessee beat Kentucky 27-8, extending the second-longest active winning streak in an uninterrupted series between major college opponents to 21 games. Erik Ainge passed for 221 yards and two touchdowns for the Volunteers, who haven't lost to the Wildcats since 1984. Notre Dame's 42-game winning streak over Navy is the longest. Tennessee beat Vanderbilt 22 straight times before losing to the Commodores last week.

CAJUN CO-CHAMPS

Louisiana-Lafayette beat Louisiana-Monroe 54-21 to give the Ragin' Cajuns a share of the Sun Belt Conference championship and their first winning season in a decade.

BIG EASY BOWL BERTH

Arkansas State will make its first postseason appearance since 1987 after beating North Texas 31-24 for a share of the Sun Belt Conference championship. The victory, along with Louisiana-Monroe's 54-21 loss to Louisiana-Lafayette, secured a spot for the Indians in the New Orleans Bowl, which will be played on Dec. 20.

MILESTONES

Florida International tied an NCAA record by returning four interceptions for touchdowns in a 52-6 drubbing of rival Florida Atlantic. Keyonvis Bouie, Lionell Singleton, Nick Turnbull and Marshall McDuffie each scored on interception returns. The last time that feat was accomplished was on Nov. 7, 1987, when Houston returned four interceptions for scores against Texas.

STREAKING

Arkansas State won 31-24 over North Texas, which lost its sixth straight game and finished winless at home for the first time since 1982. ... Justin Hamblin kicked a 32-yard field goal with 1:16 remaining to lift Utah State to a 24-21 victory over New Mexico State, which went 0-12 under first-year coach Hal Mumme.

SPEAKING

"It feels like Groundhog Year." — Colorado coach Gary Barnett, after receiving the news that the Buffaloes are going to the Big 12 title game because Iowa State lost by a field goal in overtime for the second straight year.
