East Carolina football hire rates a "B" from BCA
The Black Coaches Association issued
report cards Wednesday, handing out grades ranging from "A" to "F" to the 30
Division I-A and I-AA football schools that made coaching changes after the
2004 season.
The organization monitors the hiring of
college coaches to gauge the fairness of the hiring process as it relates to
considering and hiring blacks.
East Carolina, which last December
hired a white head coach, Skip Holtz, received a grade of "B" from the BCA.
Holtz replaced John Thompson, who was also white.
Holtz filled three positions with black
assistant coaches. Donnie Thompson was named assistant head coach and
defensive line coach, Junior Smith was hired as running backs coach, and
Marc Yellock was retained as defensive graduate assistant coach.
The BCA assigned the 30 schools which
made coaching changes an overall grade as well as specific grades for five
components of the hiring process: reasonable time, communication, candidate
interviews, search committee, and application to the school's documented
affirmative action policy.
The list below groups schools into
categories by overall grade and designates the grades assigned for each
component, respectively.

turn in documentation.)
