Green Wave's road trip to Navy on the house
Navy will cover the cost of
the Tulane football team's trip to Annapolis this weekend, a gift that
should save the financially strapped program up to $200,000.
Navy athletic director Chet Gladchuk,
who served as Tulane's AD from 1987-90, made the offer to help Tulane cope
with the destruction its campus sustained from Hurricane Katrina.
With the support of Adm. Rodney Rempt,
the Naval Academy Superintendent, Gladchuk has wiped out all the travel
costs normally associated with Tulane's trip for Saturday's game.
``We've tried to come up with a way to
make this trip on Navy,'' Gladchuk said. ``We're just doing everything we
can to help them, to support them.''
Visiting teams are normally guaranteed
an average of $120,000 from the host school. Gladchuk increased that amount
by $50,000 and sent the check to Tulane, which is using the additional money
to cover air fare for the entire football traveling party.
Navy has come up with ways to save
Tulane approximately $50,000 more in expenses for this trip. At the
academy's urging, the Wyndham Hotel in Baltimore is providing complimentary
rooms for the entire traveling party.
Navy has also arranged for free bus
transportation for the team throughout its stay in the area. The entire
Tulane traveling party has been invited to a dinner at the academy on Friday
night.
In addition, all Tulane students who
want to attend the game will receive a free ticket by simply presenting a
valid student identification card.
Gladchuk estimates the total relief
Navy is offering the Tulane athletic department to reach roughly $200,000.
``We just want this entire trip, except
for the 60 minutes on Saturday, to be very enjoyable for the Tulane folks,''
Gladchuk said.
Tulane coming home for C-USA hoops schedule
Tulane will be back in New Orleans for
basketball season, including its home game with East Carolina on Jan. 21.
The Green Wave will play 10 games,
including the entire Conference USA home schedule, on campus at Fogelman
Arena, located in the center of the school's New Orleans campus. Tulane's
first home game in New Orleans is scheduled for Dec. 27 against Richmond.
The school's women's basketball team
will also play the majority of its home schedule in Fogelman Arena,
beginning Dec. 18.
Tulane headquartered its football team
at Louisiana Tech in Ruston, LA, following Hurricane Katrina.
``It's important for our team to be
back in New Orleans and it is equally important for us to get the support we
need to be successful,'' Tulane first-year head coach Dave Dickerson said.
``With the Saints and the Hornets gone
for the season, and us being one of the first teams back playing in the city
is exciting for the team and myself. We hope to fill that void for sports
fans in the city.''
Four of Tulane's 14 ``home'' games will
be played in College Station, TX, on the campus of Texas A&M, where the team
has been based since early September due to the devastation left behind by
Katrina.
``We would love to be in Fogelman, in
our own city with our own fans for the entire season, but we are thankful to
Texas A&M for giving us the opportunity to begin our season at their
place,'' Dickerson said. ``Playing here is the best-case scenario for us.
We've been here for nearly two months and this has become our second home.''
