Pirate basketball edging toward the limelight

The East Carolina basketball team, which will unofficially kick off its season with a home exhibition game next Saturday against N.C. Central (7 p.m.), will share top billing with the Pirate football team when UAB visits Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

Tip-off for the ECU hoops squad's game with Wofford on Nov. 26 in Minges Coliseum's Williams Arena has been changed from 7 p.m. to 5 p.m., creating a football/basketball doubleheader for Pirate fans. ECU's football team will host the Blazers at noon that day in the final regular season game of the gridiron season.

The ECU Athletic Ticket office will open that Saturday at 8 a.m. for the purpose of selling both football and basketball tickets. Tickets can also be purchased at the ticket office weekdays from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. or on-line at ecupirates.com 24 hours a day.

In another sign that Pirate hoops action is just around the corner, ECU announced it is offering an eight-game "Super Saturday" mini-pack for designated games this season.

The package includes eight Saturday home games throughout the season beginning with the Nov. 26 game versus Wofford. The remaining seven games in the bundle include match-ups against Western Carolina (Dec. 10), UNC-Wilmington (Dec. 31), St. Paul's (Jan. 7), Tulsa (Jan. 28), Houston (Feb. 4), Marshall (Feb. 18) and Tulane (Feb. 25).

The "Super Saturday" package is available for $75, a savings of $30 off the face value, and can also purchased at the ticket office, online or by calling 1-800-DIAL-ECU.

First-year head coach Ricky Stokes' team opens the regular season at home against North Carolina A&T on Friday, Nov. 18, at 7 p.m.

From an ECU Athletics release.

ECU in league's upper tier in football attendance

Texas-El Paso, Memphis and East Carolina are pacing Conference USA in average home football attendance as the regular season heads into its final weeks.

The Miners, in their first year in C-USA after departing the Western Athletic Conference, draw an average of 49,161 fans to their games, far ahead of Memphis and ECU, which average 38,709 and 34,560, respectively.

No other team in the 12-team league reaches the 30,000 mark on a typical Saturday, with Marshall and Southern Mississippi coming the closest. The Thundering Herd attracts 28,604, while the Golden Eagles draw 28,305.

The attendance figures are based on information published weekly by the NCAA.

Nationally, Michigan tops the attendance charts at 110,847 per game. Tennessee, Ohio State and Penn State also average over 100,000 fans per game.

Among schools in North Carolina, ECU ranks third behind N.C. State (56,189)and UNC-Chapel Hill (52,500), but the Pirates easily surpass Wake Forest (29,288) and Duke (17,486) in average attendance.

The attendance for North Carolina schools pales in comparison to South Carolina's I-A teams. South Carolina ranks 16th nationally (78,456 per game) while Clemson is No. 18 (78,000).
