Whimper, Williams get multimillion-dollar deals
The Hartford Courant has reported that
offensive tackle Guy Whimper, a fourth-round pick from East Carolina, signed
a four-year deal for approximately $2 million Thursday with the New York
Giants.
The Courant reported that Whimper signed
only moments after Giants general manager Ernie Accorsi put out a statement
criticizing his agents for dragging out the process.
The Charlotte Observer reported that
Carolina Panthers' first-round pick DeAngelo Williams agreed to terms late
Thursday night.
Williams is expected to sign his contract
today when the Panthers report to training camp at Wofford College, and be
on the field Saturday for the first practice.
A running back from Memphis, Williams
agreed to a five-year deal worth about $7.6 million. He could challenge
DeShaun Foster for the feature back role. Williams also could be used in the
return game.
The 27th overall pick, Williams is a speed
runner and was brought in as an alternative to Foster, whose career has been
plagued by injuries.
Blazers DE nabs C-USA preseason honor
UAB defensive end Larry McSwain has been
named the Conference USA preseason defensive player of the year, according
to a vote of the league's head coaches.
The senior from Mobile was one of three
Blazers selected to the preseason, first-team all-conference squad, joining
senior offensive tackle Julius Wilson and senior linebacker Orlandus King.
McSwain has been a first-team
All-Conference USA selection the past two seasons. As a junior he had 53
total tackles and four sacks, as well as five tackles for loss. During his
first season as a Blazer, he had 56 tackles, leading C-USA, and ranking No.4
in the nation in sacks with 13.
King led the Blazers in tackles in 2005,
recording 85 stops, including 41 solo hits. King registered three sacks and
six tackles for loss last season. Wilson is slated to start on the offensive
front for the Blazers for third consecutive season when the team kicks off
the 2006 campaign. Wilson was a third-team all-conference selection in 2005.
TCU
coach resigns over phone infraction
The Texas Christian athletics department
has announced the resignation of head men's tennis coach Joey Rive,
according to a release on the university's athletics website.
"TCU has been conducting an investigation
regarding excessive phone calls to international recruits in its men's
tennis program," Rive said. "Although my intent was not to gain a recruiting
advantage, I made a mistake with regard to the rule that permits just one
call per week. I take full responsibility for my actions and deeply regret
that I have negatively impacted both TCU and the men's tennis program. As a
result, I felt it was in the best interest of TCU to step down as head
coach."
"We are obviously very disappointed to
report this situation," said TCU athletics director Danny Morrison. "Once
the rule violations were discovered by our compliance staff, we commenced an
internal investigation to determine the extent of the infractions, and then
voluntarily reported them to the Mountain West Conference and the NCAA.
Coach Rive has been cooperative throughout the entire process, and TCU will
now be working cooperatively with the NCAA staff with respect to this
ongoing matter. We are serious about following NCAA regulations to the
letter."
A search for Rive's replacement will begin
immediately. Rive served six seasons as the Horned Frogs' coach.
