National honors piling up for Houston's Lincoln
Houston junior righthanded pitcher/designated hitter
Brad Lincoln has been honored as the winner of the 2006 Brooks Wallace Award
Trophy, given annually to college baseball's top player, according to an
announcement on the Conference USA website.
It was the fourth national player of the year honor
for Lincoln following the 2006 season.
Lincoln accepted the Wallace award during a ceremony
at United Spirit Arena on the campus of Texas Tech University. He was one of
three finalists for the honor, joining Cal State Fullerton pitcher Wes
Roemer and Virginia utility player Sean Doolittle.
The Brooks Wallace Award is presented annually by
the College Baseball Foundation to the national player of the year in NCAA
Division I. It is the only award that accounts for the full season of
collegiate play, including all post-season competition. The CBF national
selection committee is comprised of coaches, writers, broadcasters, sports
information directors and former winners who most closely follow the sport.
Lincoln was a 2006 consensus first-team
All-American. He compiled a 12-2 record with a 1.69 ERA and 152 strikeouts
in 127.2 innings of work. In C-USA games, he was 7-0 with a 1.28 ERA.
He was honored as the C-USA Pitcher of the Year, was
named to the league's All-Conference first teams was selected to the C-USA
All-Tournament Team as a designated hitter.
Lincoln compiled a .295 batting average with 14 home
runs and a team-leading 53 RBI's. He became the first player in school and
Conference USA history to be taken among the Top 10 picks of Major League
Baseball's amateur draft June 6 when he was selected at No. 4 by the
Pittsburgh Pirates.
Wade's
wallet now packs a wallop
Former Marquette star Dwyane Wade may have lost in
Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum, but the MVP of the NBA championship
series reportedly has won new levels of wealth with the Miami Heat.
The South Florida Sun-Sentinel has reported that
Wade's agent, Henry Thomas, said that he expects Wade to sign a 5-year
extension with the Heat, valued between $75 million and $85 million.
Duke gets QB from prestigious prep program
The Durham Herald-Sun has reported that Duke has
received a verbal commitment from quarterback Mike Cappetto, who helped
Brother Rice High in Bloomington Hills, MI, to its sixth state championship
last season.
Cappetto, a rising senior, led his team to a 12-2
record and the state title in Michigan's second-largest classification in
2005. Brother Rice produced former UNC-Chapel Hill quarterback Matt Baker.
He threw for 15 touchdowns with just three interceptions last season.
A 6-4, 197-pounder, Cappetto made his decision after
attending Duke's football camp. He was being recruited by Boston College,
Cincinnati, San Diego State and a handful of Mid-American Conference teams,
but Duke was the first to offer a scholarship.
