Irish
fill baseball coaching vacancy
Notre Dame has named Dave Schrage its new
baseball coach, according to an announcement on the university's athletic
website.
Schrage's 19 years as a college head coach
include 15 seasons at the Division I level. He worked most recently with an
Evansville squad that ranked among the nation's hottest teams during the
2006 postseason.
Schrage just completed his fourth year at
Evansville, guiding the Aces to the most successful season in the program's
history, highlighted by winning the Missouri Valley Conference
regular-season and tournament titles, reaching the NCAA regional
championship round and earning a final national ranking of 19th in the
Collegiate Baseball magazine poll.
Fork Union, Oak Hill getting review by NCAA
USA Today's Steve Wieberg has reported that
NCAA officials will take a firsthand look this week at two football and
basketball powerhouses yellow-flagged in a crackdown on prep schools that
provide athletes with dubious academic credits.
Coaches and administrators at Fork Union
Military School and Oak Hill Academy, both in Virginia, reacted angrily when
their schools were among 22 the NCAA did not fully clear earlier this month.
An NCAA team will visit the two institutions on successive days later this
week, vice president Kevin Lennon said, beginning a review process that
could extend into the fall.
The NCAA said it would accept credits
earned by athletes who are moving on to college this fall from Fork Union,
Oak Hill and the other 20 schools. But it raised questions about what Lennon
termed "academic irregularities" — struggling athletes showing marked
academic improvement in a year's time, passing abnormally heavy course loads
or posting lower standardized test scores than their improved coursework
might suggest.
Alabama cager denied fifth year of eligibility
Thomas Mirphy of The Mobile Press-Register
has reported that the NCAA has turned down Alabama basketball player Chuck
Davis' request for a fifth season of eligibility.
The ruling came Monday in a letter from the
NCAA's membership services/student-athlete reinstatement office, which said
the "criteria for the hardship waiver was not satisfied."
The NCAA response supported an earlier
ruling from the SEC office, which deemed the request submitted by Alabama as
not fulfilling the criteria for an extra year.
The decision was not unexpected, but the
attempt was worth a shot, Alabama coach Mark Gottfried said.
Gottfried, speaking on a Monday SEC
Teleconference, would not comment on the University of Alabama's decision to
accept the application of guard Verice Cloyd.
Cloyd's academic credentials at Genesis One
Christian Academy in Mendenhall, MS, came under scrutiny this spring.
However, the NCAA ruled earlier this month that Genesis One had been cleared
for prospective freshman eligibility, allowing the university to accept
Cloyd's application.
Cloyd had hired Montgomery attorney Donald
Jackson and was prepared to enter a legal fight to gain admission at
Alabama.
