Howard joins ECU media relations staff
Amy Howard has been named assistant director of
athletic media relations at East Carolina University. Howard's appointment,
announced Monday by ECU athletic media relations director Tom McClellan,
will mark the Charlotte native's return to North Carolina after spending
three years on the athletic media relations staff at Georgia Southern.
While at GSU, Howard served as the primary publicist
for the Eagle basketball program which turned in a 20-win season and
advanced to the NIT in 2005-06. She also handled sports information duties
for the men's soccer and golf teams while working extensively with the
department's official Website.
Prior to her arrival at GSU, Howard served as an
intern in two separate capacities at her alma mater, Appalachian State.
While attending Salem (NC) College from 1999 to
2001, Howard gained television experience as a production assistant at WXII-TV
in Winston-Salem and WBTV-TV in Charlotte.
Howard earned two letters each as a member of the
Salem field hockey and softball squads. She also served as the sports editor
of the school's student newspaper, The Salemite.
Howard transferred to Appalachian State in 2001 and
earned her bachelor's degree in communications, with a concentration in
electronic media and broadcasting in May, 2003.
Bertman leads college baseball hall's 1st class
LSU athletics director Skip Bertman will be inducted
Tuesday into the new College Baseball Hall of Fame in Lubbock, TX. Bertman,
who led LSU to five national championships during his 18-year tenure as
baseball coach, is one of 10 members of the Hall’s first induction class,
according to an announcement on LSU athletics website.
The Class of 2006 also includes legendary coaches
Bobby Winkles of Arizona State, Ron Fraser of Miami, Cliff Gustafson of
Texas and Rod Dedeaux of USC, and standout former players Bob Horner of
Arizona State, Robin Ventura of Oklahoma State, Dave Winfield of Minnesota,
Will Clark of Mississippi State and Brooks Kieschnick of Texas.
The collegiate legends will participate in a two-day
celebration of college baseball in Lubbock on Monday and Tuesday. The
College Baseball Foundation will kick off the festivities on Monday with the
third annual Brooks Wallace College Baseball Player of the Year Award dinner
to be held at the United Spirit Arena on the campus of Texas Tech
University. The Hall of Fame Class will be recognized during the ceremony.
The Hall of Fame events will be carried nationally
by Fox Sports Net, as well as Fox College Sports. Information regarding the
events is posted on the College Baseball Foundation web site (collegebaseballfoundation.org).
Temple gets prized hometown grid recruit
The Philadelphia Inquirer has reported that new
Temple football coach Al Golden has received a commitment from
highly-recruited Daryl Robinson of North Catholic High in Philadelphia.
Robinson, a 5-foot-9, 165-pound two-way back for the
Falcons, originally made an oral commitment in April to defending Big East
champ West Virginia.
"They wanted me to play running back, and I want to
play the corner," Robinson told the paper. "Also, I thought I rushed into
it. I might play early at Temple, and I was born and raised in Philadelphia.
I know they haven't had good records lately, but Coach Golden showed
confidence that he is going to turn the program around."
Robinson will become the highest-rated Philadelphia
football player to attend Temple in recent memory, according to the
Inquirer.
Robinson, who said he recently ran a 4.39-second
40-meter dash, was also recruited by Penn State, Maryland, Connecticut,
Cincinnati, Pittsburgh and Rutgers.
He is the 15th-rated cornerback prospect in the
nation, according to
Scout.com.
