Accident claims life of Georgia hoops player
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has
reported that Kevin Brophy, a 21-year-old junior on Georgia's basketball
team, died in a two-car accident Thursday night near Greensboro, GA.
Brophy was driving home alone to Savannah
from Athens in a late-model BMW owned by his girlfriend, Molly Ramage. His
car collided with another vehicle, according to police. Brophy died at the
scene.
Police said a severe thunderstorm in the
area may have been a contributing factor.
Police said Brophy was traveling south on
Ga. Highway 15 just across the Oconee County line north of Greensboro. A
female was driving another vehicle north on the same highway. One car
crossed the center line, but authorities had not determined which one
Thursday night.
Ex-Navy quarterback Owens spared jail time
The military jury that acquitted former
Navy quarterback Lamar S. Owens, Jr., of rape Friday spared him from having
to serve time in prison on a pair of related felonies stemming from a sexual
encounter earlier this year with a female midshipman, according to a
Baltimore Sun report.
Owens, a senior at the Naval Academy in
Annapolis who was not allowed to graduate with his class in May because of
the charges, could still be expelled because he admitted to having sex in
the school's dorm and with a female midshipman in his company or subgroup.
Owens completed his eligibility in 2005.
East Carolina opens its 2006 season at Navy on Sept. 2.
Former Gamecock gridder suing university
The Columbia (SC) State has reported that
former South Carolina football player Moe Thompson is suing the university,
claiming the administration failed to follow its procedures when Thompson
was dismissed from school following his arrest on burglary charges in 2005.
Columbia attorney Hemphill Pride has
released a statement saying Thompson’s dismissal was handled in a “punitive
manner,” costing the state’s onetime “Mr. Football” the chance to continue
his career at another school.
Thompson, a three-year starter at defensive
end for the Gamecocks, transferred to Grambling last year but was not
eligible to play because of issues involving his academic status at the time
of his departure from USC.
Thompson also claims USC should have
allowed him to “matriculate at a reduced pace” because of his verbal and
reading disability, according to Pride’s statement.
