GMAC Bowl in Mobile moves to
January
The GMAC Bowl has been rescheduled for
Sunday, January 7, 2007 beginning at 8 p.m. EST at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in
Mobile, AL, according to an announcement on the Conference USA website.
The eighth annual GMAC Bowl will be shown
nationally on ESPN and will feature a team from C-USA versus an opponent
from the Mid American Conference or the Western Athletic Conference.
From 1999-2005, the GMAC Bowl was played on
the Wednesday or Thursday prior to Christmas. The new date will provide an
increased opportunity to showcase Mobile and the GMAC Bowl.
Bowl President Jerry Silverstein said, "To
play in prime time the night before the BCS national championship game
offers the city of Mobile, and the GMAC Bowl unbelievable exposure. The new
date presented an opportunity that we could not afford to pass up."
East Carolina has made two trips to the
GMAC Bowl.
Louisville ponies up to lock down Petrino
Louisville football coach Bobby Petrino has
signed a 10-year contract worth at least $25.5 million, according to a
Louisville Courier-Journal report.
The coach, who has interviewed for other
jobs after each of his three seasons at Louisville, said the new contract is
intended to send a message that he wants to remain as Cardinals coach.
Petrino wanted a long-term deal and reportedly insisted on including a $1
million buyout clause.
Petrino will make $1.6 million in base
salary next season. But he'll also have more than $700,000 available in
performance incentives, plus a $1 million loyalty bonus if he's still
Cardinals coach through next June. Those bonuses and incentives could push
his compensation to a level occupied by only a handful of college football
coaches.
He'll still trail Rick Pitino, who makes
$2.8 million a year plus incentives as the university's basketball coach.
Petrino's base salary will rise steadily to
a maximum of $2.6 million in 2016. His incentive package will be worth a
possible $1 million at that time. The contract also offers million-dollar
loyalty bonuses to be awarded in 2010 and 2013, and a $2 million bonus if he
completes the contract.
The salary increase represents the school's
most significant financial commitment to football since the building of Papa
John's Cardinal Stadium. Petrino's base salary when he was hired for the
2003 season was $450,000. John L. Smith was making $800,000, including
incentives, when he departed in 2002. Louisville assistants received a
significant boost in pay after last season and are due for another raise
this month.
Athletic director Tom Jurich said his
department can handle the added expense. Louisville athletics ran a $2
million surplus last season, its first in the Big East after leaving
Conference USA. Jurich said much of that will be plowed directly back into
Petrino's compensation. The Cardinals received bonuses from the Big East
this past season for their second-place football finish and appearance in
the Toyota Gator Bowl.
Tulsa
names McCombs women's golf coach
Trelle McCombs has been named women's golf
coach at Tulsa today, according to an announcement on the Conference USA
website.
The 30-year old McCombs has seven years of
head coaching experience on the Division I level. She has spent the past
three years (2003-06) as the head coach at Augusta State (GA) University,
and before that coached the men's and women's teams at Mercer for four years
(1999-2003).
This past year, McCombs led ASU to the
school's first-ever NCAA regional and national tournament appearances. In
her three seasons, she has seen her team climb 104 spots in the Golfstat
national rankings to a school-best ranking of 32nd at the close of the 2006
season. ASU completed just its fifth season of women's golf as an
intercollegiate sport.
She guided her 2006 squad to six team
tournament titles, while her players garnered five individual medalist
crowns. In the 2004-05 campaign, McCombs had the nation's second-ranked
freshman class, according to the Golfstat rankings for freshman class
impact.
