Blue
Devils name new lacrosse coach
Duke named former Hofstra coach John
Danowski on Friday to guide the Blue Devils lacrosse team.
Danowski's son, Matt, is a senior
All-American in the Blue Devil program which was suspended this past season
after charges of sexual assault were made by a stripper following a team
party in March.
Danowski's record at Hofstra was 192-123
over 21 seasons. His team made the NCAA Tournament in seven of the past 11
seasons.
Former Duke back issues $1 million challenge
The 1950's would have to be considered
among the glory years for Duke’s football program. The Blue Devils won over
60 percent of their games, captured three ACC championships and played in
two Orange Bowls.
Running back Bob Pascal played a
significant role in that legacy. His three years on the varsity coincided
with the first three years of ACC football, during which time the Devils
were undefeated (12-0) in league games and ripped Nebraska in Miami on New
Year’s Day.
Pascal rushed for over 1,500 yards and 19
touchdowns, earned first team All-ACC honors twice and was a first team
All-America as a senior in 1955, the year he helped Duke to one of its
signature victories at Ohio State.
Like many of his generation, Pascal has
maintained a passion for his alma mater for the past half-century and has
provided tangible support toward the rebuilding of the football program. He
has made his strongest statement to date regarding his feelings for the
university by issuing a $1 million challenge to assist Duke football,
according to a story by John Roth at
goduke.com.
Pascal indicated he would match any
contribution to Duke football on a dollar-to-dollar basis up to a maximum of
$100,000 per donor. His challenge will remain in effect until the $1 million
total is met.
Pascal said his dollars are not intended
for football facility projects but for more immediate needs such as
equipment, coaches’ salaries and new technology not already covered in the
program’s operating budget.
"“Anything to win games,” explained Pascal,
who was inducted into the Duke Sports Hall of Fame in 1995. “Capital
projects, such as renovating stadiums, all that will come when we start
winning. We need to win. So, I want to spend my money where winning is the
immediate objective."
Current Duke back Harris gets tube time
Duke sophomore running back Clifford Harris
will be featured in a story to be televised this weekend on Football
Saturdays in the South, according to the Duke athletics website.
The show is a six-episode summer series
produced by Lincoln Financial Sports on the stories, legends and players
that make southern college football what it is today.
In North Carolina, the show can be seen on
WTVD in Raleigh/Durham (Sunday at 4 p.m.), WAXN in Charlotte (Saturday at 3
p.m.), WXLV in Greensboro (Saturday at 11 p.m.), WFXI in Greenville (Sunday
at 12 noon) and WSFX in Wilmington (Sunday at 12 noon).
