C-USA
players reap All-America honors
Six Conference USA players were named
to the 2006 Louisville Slugger/Collegiate Baseball All-American team, it has
been announced by the publication.
Houston junior pitcher/designated
hitter Brad Lincoln and Rice senior righthander Eddie Degerman were the two
C-USA players that earned first team All-America status.
As reported in Bonesville's Nuggets on
Saturday, East Carolina senior catcher Jake Smith was named to the second
team, while Tulane junior first baseman Mark Hamilton, Rice sophomore
lefthander Cole St. Clair and Rice sophomore shortstop Brian Friday earned
third team status.
"Flesh-eating" germ claims
Tulsa gridder
The Oklahoma state medical examiner's
office said that Tulsa tight end Devin Adair died of complications from
necrotizing fasciitis, also known as the "flesh-eating" bacteria.
The rare infection is caused commonly
by the Streptococcus A bacteria, which is the same bacteria that causes
strep throat. Usually this bacterium can be killed by antibiotics, but
sometimes a stronger version of Strep can occur that is life-threatening and
is known as the "flesh-eating" bacteria.
The 21-year old died April 28 after
being hospitalized for a week.
Adair, from Manhattan Beach,
California, came to Tulsa at mid-semester. He was a junior college transfer
from El Camino (CA) Junior College.
Blazers baseball coach hangs up cleats
Larry Giangrosso, UAB's head baseball
coach the past seven years, has announced his retirement from coaching.
"After 31 years I am retiring from
coaching," said Giangrosso. "I want to give a heartfelt thanks to all of our
players, past and present, and their families for it has truly been a
pleasure. I want to also give a special thanks to all of my colleagues in
the coaching profession with whom we have developed great friendships."
A Birmingham native, Giangrosso came
to UAB in 2000 after nine seasons as the head coach at Central Alabama
Community College.
In 2003, the Blazers opened the season
with 13 consecutive victories to establish a mark for the best UAB start in
school history. The Blazers' win total of 31 in 2005 was the most for the
program since the 1997 campaign. UAB earned the program's third consecutive
berth in the Conference USA Tournament in 2006.
Giangrosso was inducted into the
Alabama Baseball Coaches' Hall of Fame in 2001.
