USM-Memphis game shifts to Sunday for ESPN
Southern Mississippi's
2006 football game at the Liberty Bowl against Memphis has been moved from
Saturday, Nov. 4, to Sunday, Nov. 5, and will be aired on ESPN at 8 p.m.
(ET).
The selection of the
matchup by ESPN marks the fifth televised game for the Golden Eagles for the
upcoming season. Other televised games on USM's schedule include Central
Florida (Sept. 26) and Tulsa (Oct. 3) on back to back Tuesday nights on
ESPN2, and East Carolina (Oct. 28) and UAB (Nov. 18) on CSTV.
This marks the 56th
meeting between Southern Miss and Memphis with the Golden Eagles holding a
36-19-1 lead in the series. The Tigers have won the past two games,
including last year's 26-20 win in Hattiesburg.
Tar Heels AD Baddour gets contract extension
UNC-Chapel Hill
athletic director Dick Baddour has been given a two-year contract extension
through the 2008-09 season.
Baddour is completing
his ninth year as the school's AD. During his tenure, the Tar Heels have won
a league-leading 49 ACC championships, eight more than Duke, which is
second. This year, the Tar Heels tied Duke and Virginia for the ACC lead
with five team titles.
Baddour's contract runs
through the 2008-09 school year. It includes a base salary of $270,000 in
2006-07, $285,000 in 2007-08 and $295,000 in 2008-09.
U.S. Women's open to have heavy Duke flavor
The Durham Herald has
reported that the U.S. Women's Open will have a heavy Duke representation
later this month.
Eight Duke golfers
including two current players will compete for the crown beginning June 29
in Newport, RI. Two more Blue Devils have an outside chance at playing with
rising senior Anna Grzebien and incoming freshman Alison Whitaker listed as
alternates.
Fresh off helping the
Blue Devils to their second straight NCAA title, Amanda Blumenherst and
Jennie Lee will seek the ultimate individual national title after making it
through sectional qualifying. U.S. Open rookie Blumenherst was national
player of the year for Duke this past season as a freshman, while Lee
making her second Open appearance was runner-up at the NCAA Championship.
Former Duke golfer
Brittany Lang tied for second in the Open last year and Jenny Chuasiriporn
was runner-up in 1999.
Lang leads the
contingent of former Duke golfers in the field by virtue of last year's
finish. Like Lang, former Duke golfer Virada Nirapathpongporn was exempt
from qualifying. Nirapathpongporn earned her spot by standing in the top 35
on the LPGA Tour money list.
Four other former Blue
Devils Beth Bauer, Candy Hannemann, Liz Janangelo and Kristina Engstrom
Tucker made it through qualifying.
