Owls
carrying C-USA banner to Omaha
Rice used outstanding
relief pitching from Cole St. Clair and Bryce Cox, along with big hits from
Josh Rodriguez and Joe Savery to defeat Oklahoma, 11-5, and win the Houston
super regional.
The Owls advance to
their fifth College World Series since 1997 and open play on Saturday, June
17.
"I couldn't be prouder
of this team", said Rice head coach Wayne Graham. "I knew they could go out
and do what they did today."
Rice starter Craig Crow
faced just five batters, allowing two runs before pulled in the first
inning. Owls closer Cole St. Clair entered the game and threw 5.1 innings of
solid relief, just 1/3 of an inning shy of his longest stretch of the
season. He allowed three runs on five hits, did not walk a batter and struck
out three.
Bryce Cox came in to
fire three scoreless innings, matching his season best for strikeouts with
four and not walking a batter.
ECU's Ray shares Coastal Plain League honor
East Carolina's Jamie
Ray, who plays for Martinsville, is co-hitter of the week in the Coastal
Plain League along with Asheboro's C.J. Zeigler. The selections are for the
period from May 31 to June 11, according to a release at
ecupirates.com.
Ray, a sophomore for
the Pirates, played in seven games (six starts) for the Mustangs during an
eight-game span. He finished with a league-best .538 batting average with 14
hits, including three doubles and a triple. He also drove in five runs and
scored six. Ray tallied 19 total bases to go with a .731 slugging percentage
and a league-best .600 on-base percentage. He is 4-of-6 on stolen base
attempts thus far.
Terms of Huggins' K-State contract reported
Kansas State basketball
coach Bob Huggins will make a guaranteed $800,000 per year for the first
three years of his contract, and $900,000 and $1 million in years four and
five, according to the Manhattan (KA) Mercury.
The former Cincinnati
coach can get $125,000 through a shoe contract and up to $250,000 per year
through performance-based incentives, reported the paper, which said that he
also got a one-time $30,000 signing bonus.
Huggins' five-year
contract, which he signed June 5 after an extended period of review by both
sides, actually pays him the same $180,000 base salary as his predecessor,
Jim Wooldridge. Huggins also gets similar benefits, including insurance and
retirement plans, a membership at the Manhattan Country Club, and golfing
privileges at Colbert Hills.
Huggins also gets two
cars, 20 men's basketball tickets, six football tickets and six women's
basketball tickets. Ticket packages also include parking passes.
Wooldridge's deal
provided only one car.
