GREENVILLE — East Carolina scored five runs in the third inning to support a solid start by senior left-hander Jake Kuchmaner in an 8-2 win over visiting Virginia Commonwealth on Friday night.

The Pirates improved to 13-10 going into the second matchup of a 3-game series with the Rams (11-9) on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Clark-LeClair Stadium.

Zach Agnos was 3-for-4 with two RBIs for ECU, which went ahead to stay on his single to right that scored Lane Hoover in the first inning.

Hoover scored the first run in the third inning on a throwing error on a bunt single by Alec Makarewicz. Hoover had walked and Jacob Jenkins-Cowart had a single to begin the productive frame. Agnos singled to score Jenkins-Cowart for a 3-0 lead.

Makarewicz scored on a sacrifice bunt before Ryder Giles had a 2-run single up the middle for a 6-0 advantage.

The Pirates added back-to-back solo homers by Josh Moylan and Jacob Starling in the seventh.

Kuchmaner (3-1) went five innings. He yielded seven hits and two runs (one earned) with two walks and five strikeouts.

Garrett Saylor, Skylar Brooks, Danny Beal, Merritt Beaker and Trey Yesavage combined to keep VCU scoreless over the last four innings.
