GREENVILLE — East Carolina scored three runs in the sixth inning and held off Elon for a 7-6 victory at Clark-LeClair Stadium on Wednesday.
With the score tied at 4 in the sixth, Cam Clonch had a 1-out double and scored the go-ahead run on a single to left by Ryan McCrystal. A 2-run homer by Josh Moylan put the Pirates ahead, 7-4.
ECU improved to 12-10 going into a 3-game series at home against Virginia Commonwealth (11-8) that starts Friday at 6:30 p.m.
The Pirates tallied twice in the opening frame on Wednesday on an RBI double by Alec Makarewicz and a run-scoring single by Zach Agnos.
Luke Stephenson had a 3-run homer for the Phoenix (11-9) in the third to give the visitors a 3-2 lead.
ECU evened the score at 3 in the third on a solo homer by Jacob Jenkins-Cowart. Josh Moylan’s homer in the fourth gave the Pirates a 4-3 lead.
Elon tied the score in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Cole Reynolds.
The Phoenix got a pair of runs in the seventh on walks with the bases loaded.
The Pirates used nine pitchers. Agnos (1-0) got the win in relief and Carter Spivey picked up his second save.
ECU had 13 hits. Getting two each for the Pirates were Lane Hoover, Makarewicz, Agnos, Moylan and Starling.
