WILMINGTON — A pair of unearned runs in the eighth inning lifted East Carolina to a 3-1 win at UNC-Wilmington on Tuesday night.
The Pirates climbed over .500 to 11-10 going into a home game with Elon (11-8) on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
Ben Newton got ECU started in the eighth with a single through the right side. Jake Kuchmaner came in as a pinch runner and Bryson Worrell’s sacrifice bunt moved Kuchmaner to second. Lane Hoover reached on a throwing error that allowed Kuchmaner to come home for a 2-1 Pirates lead.
Hoover stole second and went to third on a throwing error by the catcher. He scored on a sacrifice fly to right by Jacob Jenkins-Cowart.
ECU broke a scoreless deadlock in the sixth after a leadoff single by Jacob Starling. Starling moved to third on a one-out single by Worrell and gave the Pirates a 1-0 lead on an RBI grounder to second by Hoover.
The Seahawks tied the score in the bottom of the sixth as Taber Mongero doubled and later scored on a wild pitch.
Garrett Saylor (2-2) was perfect over the last three innings with three strikeouts to earn the win.
