GREENVILLE — East Carolina overcame a 13-point deficit in the second half for an 83-81 win over Appalachian State in Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum on Friday night.
Jayden Gardner had 22 points and 11 rebounds for ECU (5-4). Seth Leday had 18 points and nine rebounds.
A tip-in by LeDay gave the Pirates an 82-81 lead with 18 seconds left. Gardner made a free throw for the final margin with four seconds remaining.
Gardner finished 16 of 19 at the line.
Shawn Williams added 15 points in the win and K.J. Davis scored 10. Isaac Fleming had eight points, Dimitri Spasojevic tallied six and Tyler Foster contributed four points.
The Mountaineers (2-5) got 25 points from Ronshad Shabazz and 24 from Justin Forrest. Isaac Johnson pulled down 13 rebounds in the loss.
ECU had an advantage at the line as the Pirates made 24 of 33 free throws for 72.7 percent while the visitors were 13 of 22 for 59.1 percent/
The Pirates host Maryland-Eastern Shore (1-7) on Sunday at 4 p.m.
