WILLIAMSBURG, VA — East Carolina battled for five hours and 30 minutes on Wednesday night before emerging with a 14-13 win at William & Mary in 13 innings.
Dixon Williams had an RBI single for the go-ahead run for the No. 9 Pirates (28-8) in the top of the 13th and Bristol Carter had a 2-run homer for a 14-11 lead.
Th Tribe (25-12) scored twice in the bottom of the 13th on a bases-loaded walk and a wild pitch before Parker Thomas induced a game-ending fly out to the warning track in center to leave the bases loaded.
W&M left 27 men on base.
“I’ve never been a part of something like that before,” said ECU coach Cliff Godwin on the Pirate radio network. “Our guys fought. … Thank God for Parker Thomas.”
Thomas entered with one away in the ninth and issued a walk to load the bases. He escaped for his first save with a strikeout and the fly to deep center that Ryley Johnson snared.
ECU outhit their hosts, 18-17, as Carter Cunningham went 4-for-7 with a triple and three RBIs. Carter had three hits with a home run and three RBIs. Jenkins-Cowart finished with three hits, a home run and four RBIs.
Johnson had a home run among his three hits.
Both teams scored twice in the 11th.
Erik Ritchie (1-0) got the win despite yielding two earned runs in the 13th.
ECU hosts Wichita State for an American Athletic Conference series that gets underway on Friday at 6 p.m. The Shockers are 21-16 overall and are 7-5 in the AAC with a home game against Oral Roberts on Wednesday night.
