INDIANAPOLIS — The National Association of Basketball Coaches introduced a sweeping new recruiting model Wednesday that includes recommending the NCAA grant college players a fifth year of eligibility and coaches more access to their players in the offseason.

The NABC discussed the proposal at its annual summer meeting and will submit a revised edition to the NCAA late this week or early next week.

The most significant changes include granting players five years of eligibility, allowing coaches to talk to players outside the traditional player-coach environment and eliminating official visits to high school juniors in favor of increased phone calls.

"This will change the landscape of college basketball," said IUPUI coach Ron Hunter, who sat on the committee that wrote the recommendations. "Where now, me as a coach, could have access to my kids and be able to help them become a better basketball player or a better student."

The NCAA asked the NABC nearly three months ago to help develop a new recruiting model that would address the student-athlete experience as a whole, both on and off the court, in hopes of getting more players to come to college, stay in college and stay at the school they choose first.

The NABC held a 3-hour meeting Wednesday to get reaction from many of its member coaches. Some recommended subtle changes, which means another committee must examine the revised edition before it is submitted to the NCAA for approval.

Executive director Jim Haney was reluctant to talk about specifics, instead saying the recommendations are geared toward three goals the committee set — getting players to graduate, keeping them eligible and from transferring schools.

Tulsa set for TV hoops clash with Sooners

The University of Tulsa basketball team will square off against the Oklahoma Sooners in the Touchtone Energy All-College Classic, Dec. 28, as part of an ESPN doubleheader at the Ford Center in Oklahoma City.

The Golden Hurricane will face the Sooners in the first game at 6:00 p.m. The other game of the doubleheader pits Oklahoma State against Gonzaga at 8:30 p.m.

The Tulsa-Oklahoma contest is a part of a three-game series between the two schools. Oklahoma captured an 81-73 victory this past season at home.

Oklahoma was originally schedule to return to Tulsa during the upcoming season, but that game will now be played at the Donald W. Reynolds Center during the 2005-06 season.

Currently a member of the Western Athletic Conference, Tulsa has accepted an invitation to join Conference USA in 2005-06.

The complete 2004-05 Tulsa basketball schedule will be released in August.
