The University of Louisville football
program figures to be featured eight times on national broadcasts during the
2004 season, the school's athletic department announced Thursday.
With 17 starters returning, the
Cardinals will appear on national television five times and are likely to
have three games broadcast on national radio.
The Cardinals open the season with
Kentucky in a September 5 contest that will be broadcast live on ESPN and
the College Football Radio Network.
On October 14, the Cardinals will take
on Miami (FL) on ESPN's featured Thursday night broadcast. Westwood One
radio may also pick that contest up, said the announcement, along with the
November 10 game against Texas Christian.
Louisville hosts South Florida in
another ESPN game on Friday night, October 22, before taking Memphis on ESPN
on November 4 and TCU on ESPN2 on November 10.
"We're excited about being featured on many of these networks," said head
coach Bobby Petrino. "This is something that's great for recruiting and our
football program because many of our recruits are home watching and
listening to the radio. This kind of national exposure is immeasurable for
us as we continue to build this program."
Duke AD:
Say it ain't so, Coach K
Duke head basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski
has been approached by the Los Angeles Lakers regarding the NBA team's head
coaching vacancy, the school's athletics director confirmed Thursday.
"Consistent with our special relationship,
Coach K has informed us that the Los Angeles Lakers have contacted him and
entered into serious discussions to fill their vacant head coaching
position," said Joe Alleva in a statement on Duke's official athletics
website. "We have long believed that Mike is the best coach in the country.
The Lakers' interest in him merely confirms what we have known."
Krzyzewski has been the Blue Devils' head
basketball coach for the past 24 seasons, a span during which the team has
won three national championships.
Alleva indicated that Duke has not resigned itself
to an immediate future without
Krzyzewski.
"We hope that Mike will decide to stay in
college coaching at Duke, a place that has been so special to him throughout
his outstanding career," stated Alleva. "Mike has been an incredible asset
to our institution and on a much larger scale, to the sport of college
basketball."
Since arriving at Duke in 1981, Krzyzewski
has compiled a 621-179 record, leading the Blue Devils to national titles
1991, 1992 and 2001, 10 Final Four appearances, eight ACC Tournament
championships and 10 ACC regular season titles.
He has been
named National Coach of the Year by various outlets 13 times in nine
different seasons, according to the Duke announcement, and his teams have
reached the No. 1 national ranking in 12 different seasons, including each
of the last seven years.
In November 2001, Duke extended Krzyzewski
a lifetime contract.
