Central Florida's game at Wisconsin on Sept. 4 — the first game of the George O’Leary era — and the Golden Knights' contest at Penn State on Sept. 18 will be televised by ESPN regional, the Big Ten Conference announced recently.

The UCF-Wisconsin game is slated for a noon kickoff while the Penn State game has a 12:10 p.m. start time.

Central Florida, a member of the Mid-American Conference, has accepted an invitation to join Conference USA in 2005-06.

According to a UCF news release, Sunshine Network may acquire the rights to broadcast the games against the Badgers and the Nittany Lions in Florida, but both games would be accessible to anyone in the country via the ESPN Gameplan pay-per-view package.

Sunshine Network has yet to release its television plans for UCF games this fall, the release noted, adding that the Mid-American Conference also has yet to announce its MAC Game of the Week schedule for the 2004 season.

The UCF-Wisconsin game in Madison marks the first-ever meeting between the two schools. The Badgers are coming off a 7-6 season in 2003, including a trip to the Music City Bowl.

The Knights visit Beaver Stadium to face PSU for the second time in school history. UCF lost a 27-24 decision in 2002 to the Nittany Lions.

UCF opens its 2004 home schedule Sept. 11 vs. BIG EAST co-champion West Virginia at the Florida Citrus Bowl. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m. in Orlando. That game comes one week after the Mountaineers open at home against East Carolina.

ACC, Big 12 icon Carl James dead at 75

CHARLOTTE — Carl James, a former star athlete, college athletics administrator and the boss of a major conference at a key point in its evolution, passed away Saturday at 75.

James served as Big Eight commissioner for 16 years after putting in stints as athletics director at Duke and Maryland.

He died at his home in Cornelius after fighting skin cancer for the past year, said Chris Theisen, a spokesman for the Big 12 Conference, the successor of the Big Eight.

James, a Raleigh native, was a football and track star at Duke in 1949-51. He went on to become athletic director at Maryland and at his alma mater before taking over as commissioner of the Big Eight Conference in 1980.

He retired in 1996 after helping to add four Texas schools to what became the Big 12 Conference.

James is  survived by his wife, Marjorie Pettit James, and two daughters.
