AUBURN — Former Auburn baseball
assistant Tom Slater was hired Tuesday as head coach of the Tigers.
Slater, who replaces the fired Steve Renfroe, spent last season as an
assistant at Florida after three years as head coach at Virginia Military
Institute.
Slater helped lead the Tigers to five NCAA regional appearances from
1995-2000, including two regional championships and an appearance in the
College World Series in 1997.
During his stint under then-head coach Hal Baird, who led the search for a
successor to Renfroe, Auburn posted the four highest win totals in the
program's history, including 50-win seasons in 1995 and 1997 and 46-win
seasons in 1998 and 1999.
After 20 seasons as an Auburn
assistant, Renfroe had taken over for the long-successful Baird before the
2001 season. Baird, a former All-American at East Carolina, coached the
Pirates before taking the Auburn job in 1985.
