Louisville headlines a group of four Conference USA basketball teams were ranked among the Top 25 in NCAA Attendance for the 2003-04 season, the league announced this week.

The Cardinals finished fourth out of 326 NCAA Division I schools. Memphis and Marquette ranked in the Top 12 in attendance, while Cincinnati was 23rd according to figures released by the NCAA.

U of L posted a 13-2 mark at Freedom Hall, averaging 19,443 fans per game for a total of 291,643 through 15 dates. Louisville finished 22-10 overall record and made its second NCAA Tournament appearance in three years under third-year head coach Rick Pitino.

The Cards have ranked in the Top 10 nationally in attendance for 28 straight years, with a Top five ranking in the last 22.

Memphis, coached by John Calipari, finished 10th with a total of 231,481 fans in its 15 games at The Pyramid, an average of 15,432 per game. The Tigers won all 15 of those games. U of M was 22-8 overall record and went to the NCAA Tournament for the second year in a row.

This season, the Tigers will move into the brand-new, state-of-the art Fed Ex Forum in downtown Memphis.

Marquette ranked 12th in attendance, averaging 15,291 fans in 18 games at the Bradley Center. The Golden Eagles posted a 19-12 overall record and earned their fourth postseason appearance in five seasons under head coach Tom Crean, advancing to the quarterfinals of the NIT.

Cincinnati 12,805 fans per game and totaled 243,290 fans over 19 home contests at Fifth Third Arena at Shoemaker Center (15 games) and U.S. Bank Arena (four games). The Bearcats concluded the year with a 25-7 record and made their 13th straight NCAA Tournament appearance under head coach Bob Huggins.

Stars in alignment for Burks on NBA draft day

Conference USA Basketball Player of the Year Antonio Burks was granted both of his wishes on the NBA's draft day on Thursday. The Memphis point guard not only heard his name called, he wound up on the roster of his hometown team.

The 6-1 Burks, a Memphis native, was selected 36th by the Orlando Magic in the draft's second round. After the Memphis Grizzlies picked at 49th, the club orchestrated two separate deals, adding Burks and Texas Tech standout Andre Emmett.

As a senior, Burks guided the Tigers to a 22-8 overall record and a 12-4 league mark last as Memphis won a share of the C-USA regular-season crown and earned its second straight NCAA Tournament berth.

Burks finished his career with 1,028 points (11.3 ppg), 487 assists (5.4 apg) and 177 steals (1.9 spg). He is only the fourth player in Tiger history to have 1,000 points, 450 assists and 170 steals.

He is the first Memphis player to be drafted since Dajuan Wagner was taken with the sixth pick of the 2002 NBA Draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers. He is the 26th C-USA player drafted since the league was established nine years ago.
