The gnawing of fingernails came to a halt in Durham Monday after Duke head basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski informed the NBA's Los Angeles Lakers that he will remain at the university.

After several days of speculation in the wake of Duke athletic director Joe Alleva's announcement last week that Krzyzewski had "entered into serious discussions" with the Lakers "to fill their vacant head coaching position," the school issued a release Monday indicating the Naismith Hall of Fame member would remain with the Blue Devils.

Krzyzewski  has been Duke's head coach since the 1980-81 season, a span during which he has led the Blue Devils to three national championships (1991, 1992 and 2001), 10 Final Four appearances, eight ACC Tournament championships and 10 ACC regular season titles.

Media reports had indicated LA general manager Mitch Kupchak offered Krzyzewski a five-year, $40 million pact and an ownership stake in the team to succeed former coach Phil Jackson, who left the franchise after the Detroit Pistons defeated the Lakers for the 2004 NBA championship.

Krzyzewski has compiled a 694-240 record in 29 seasons and a 621-179 record in 24 years at Duke. Prior to taking over the Blue Devils program, he coached his alma mater, Army, to a 73-59 record from 1975-80 and led the Black Knights to an NIT appearance in 1978.

UAB administrator named AD at UL-Monroe

Bobby Staub, a senior associate athletics director at UAB and a member of the Blazers' athletic staff the past 20 years, has been named director of athletics at the University of Louisiana at Monroe.

Staub, who has held his current position at UAB since 1997, joined the Blazers staff in 1984 as assistant ticket manager and served as athletic ticket manager from 1985-89. He became assistant athletics director in 1990 and remained in that position until 1995, when he was named associate athletic director.

A 1982 graduate of Auburn with a degree in industrial management, Staub is a member of several professional and service organizations, including the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators (NACMA) and the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA). Staub founded the UAB chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and is still involved as the organization's advisor.

Staub is in his first year as a member of the NCAA Division I Baseball Committee, and is also a member of the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators, the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics and the UAB Faculty Athletic Committee. He has been the Tournament Manager for the Conference USA Men's Basketball Championships and has been been the UAB's liaison for the Collegiate Licensing Company.

A native of Birmingham, Staub is married to the former Laura Vaughan of Gainesville, GA.
