SAN ANTONIO — First-year American Athletic Conference member Texas-San Antonio won its first league series with a 6-5 victory over No. 10 East Carolina on Sunday.
The Pirates (16-6) put the potential tying run in scoring position in the top of the ninth with a 2-out double by Carter Cunningham before a ground out ended the game.
The Roadrunners (12-12) led the rest of the way after an RBI single by Alexander Olivo in a 2-run first inning.
ECU hit four home runs, the first cutting the lead to 2-1 in the second on a solo shot by Justin Wilcoxen.
A 2-run blast by Dixon Williams in the fourth got the Pirates within 4-3. Joey Berini’s homer in the sixth trimmed the margin to 5-4.
Ryan McCrystal’s solo homer on the 10th pitch of an at-bat closed the scoring in the eighth.
Jake Hunter (1-2) started and was charged with the loss. He went two and two-thirds innings and yielded five hits and four runs (two earned) while striking out one without a walk. Erik Ritchie allowed one run (earned) in two and one-third innings with five strikeouts. Danny Beal allowed one earned run over the last three frames.
Jacob Jenkins-Cowart and McCrystal each had two hits for ECU, which hosts UNC-Wilmington on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
