SAN ANTONIO — Host Texas San Antonio nicked East Carolina ace Trey Yesavage for four runs in the first three innings and dealt the No. 10 Pirates a 4-2 loss in their first American Athletic Conference game on Friday night.
ECU (15-5) had an 8-game winning streak snapped and will look to even the series with the Roadrunners (11-11) on Saturday at 3 p.m.
New AAC member UTSA took a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI single by Matt King and left the bases loaded in the first frame on an inning-ending strikeout by Yesavage (4-1). Yesavage went five innings, allowing eight hits, four runs (all earned) while walking one and striking out five.
Broc Parmer and James Taussig had RBI singles in the third for the hosts, who added their final run on a sacrifice bunt by Tye Odom.
Ethan Norby finished on the mound with three scoreless innings. He yielded one hit and two walks while whiffing four.
The Pirates got on the board in the sixth on an RBI single by Bristol Carter that brought in Jacob Jenkins-Cowart.
Jenkins-Cowart scored again in the eighth on a 2-out single by Ryan McCrystal.
Robert Orloski (1-0) got the win despite being tagged for nine hits over six innings. Ruger Riojas went the last three innings for his second save.
