GREENVILLE — Zach Root, Wyatt Lunsford-Shenkman and Aaron Groller combined for a 2-hit shutout as No. 11 East Carolina took its series with Columbia with an 8-0 win at Clark-LeClair Stadium on Saturday.

The Pirates (13-4) were boosted offensively by 2-run homers from Dixon Williams and Carter Cunningham.

ECU looks to sweep the Lions (3-10) on Sunday in an 11:30 a.m. start.

Root (3-0) went six innings. The sophomore left-hander allowed one hit and one walk while striking out eight.

Lunsford-Shenkman pitched the seventh and eighth. He walked one and struck out three with no hits.

Groller yielded a leadoff double in the ninth before sandwiching two ground outs around a fly ball to close the nonconference contest.

The Pirates took the lead in the third after Ryley Johnson walked and stole second. He moved to third on a ground ball by Cunningham and came home on a grounder to the right side by Jacob Jenkins-Cowart.

Williams had a sacrifice fly in the fourth for a 2-0 lead. Williams homered to right with Bristol Carter aboard in the sixth.

Cam Clonch connected for a 2-run single to left in the seventh.

Cunningham carried the fence in center after Johnson reached on a 2-out walk in the eighth.
