GREENVILLE — East Carolina backed another stellar start by Trey Yesavage with an abundance of offense in a 17-3 win over Columbia on Friday night at Clark-LeClair Stadium.
The second matchup of a 3-game series is scheduled for Saturday at 4 p.m.
Yesavage (4-0) yielded a solo home run to Cole Hage in the top of the first but by the time he had gone six innings, the No. 11 Pirates had surged to a 9-1 lead. His line showed two hits, one run (earned), two walks and 10 strikeouts.
Ryley Johnson hit a 2-run homer in a 4-run second inning.
ECU (12-4) added four runs in the fifth with a 2-run single through the right side by Jacob Jenkins-Cowart and a sacrifice gunt by Joey Berini that brought in two more runs.
Berini added a run-scoring single in the sixth.
Jenkins-Cowart, Bristol Carter and Walker Barron had RBI singles as the Pirates erupted for eight runs in the seventh.
Sam Miller closed the scoring with a solo homer for the Lions (3-9) in the ninth.
A crowd of 4,557 saw the Pirates outhit the visitors, 13-4, as Jenkins-Cowart had three hits and four RBIs.
Johnson, Carter and Barron had two hits each. Berini drove in three runs.
