LYNCHBURG, VA — After 1-run losses at Campbell, North Carolina and Old Dominion, No. 11 East Carolina broke through for its first road win of the season with a 9-5 triumph at Liberty on Friday.
Trey Yesavage delivered another strong start and the Pirates gave him abundant offensive support. Yesavage allowed three hits and one earned run through six innings with one earned run, two walks and nine strikeouts.
The Pirates (8-4) went ahead to stay on a sacrifice fly by Ryley Johnson in the third.
ECU expanded the lead to 3-0 in the fifth on a 2-run double by Carter Cunningham.
Bristol Carter had a run-scoring triple for the Pirates in the sixth.
ECU had a 5-run eighth inning that included a bases-loaded walk to Joey Berini, a hit batter (Johnson) with the sacks full and a 3-run double by Cunningham, who had a career best five RBIs.
“We were able to expand and that was huge,” said Pirate skipper Cliff Godwin on the ECU radio network.
Carter and Cunningham each had three hits.
The Pirates got a clean inning of relief from Wyatt Lunsford-Shenkman in the seventh.
The Flames (5-8) scored four times in the ninth before Jackson Dilorenzo came on to notch the last two outs.
The teams are scheduled to continue the 3-game series on Saturday at 2 p.m.
